How To Paint A Garage

Most types of commercial paints are not meant to be used on the cement flooring of car garages. For this surface, there are two part epoxy products that give the best results. In fact, for all cement surfaces you must keep the following tips in mind.

New cement

New cement must cure for at least 28 days and be well dry before prepping the surface for painting. All surface dust must be removed with a broom or stiff brush. Fill all cracks, holes, etc., with mortar and let cure.

Moisture factors

It’s important to verify whether any dampness is present which could spread across the surface and cause the paint to eventually lift - another reason to choose your paint product wisely. To test the surface humidity in 4 or 5 places. Use masking tape and a piece of plastic to cover the area to be tested. The plastic sheet must stay in place for 24 hours if the temperature is higher than 20 °C and for 3 days if the temperature is between 5 and 20 °C. The test is invalid if the temperature is below 5 °C. After the required time has elapsed, check for signs of humidity (drops under the plastic sheet).

If there is no humidity, apply an oil-based paint or latex. If humidity is present, you can either apply latex or make a false floor to act as a vapour barrier.
